This is a pictorial chronicle of our tour of Alaska's Kenai Peninsula from June 22, 2006 to July 5, 2006.

We flew out of Baltimore's airport on June 22 bound for Anchorage, AK. Ten air hours later we arrived in Anchorage to a bright sunny day with a temperature of about 55 (about 40 degrees lower than Baltimore). We decided to spend the first two nights in Anchorage to help acclimate ourselves to the new environment and to tour the Anchorage area. Thus begins our tour.

There were several areas in and around Anchorage that we wanted to visit: the Portage glacier, the Alaska Native Heritage Center, and the Alaskan wildlife museum at Elmendorf Air Force Base.

The Portage glacier had shrunk greatly since the last time I was there, it is now little more than an over-sized ice cube and not very exciting. We went from there to the Alaska Native Heritage Center which has a number of exhibits and demonstrations from differing Native Alaskan groups. It had reproductions of villages and dwellings along with a guide in each to explain the exhibit. This was worth the trip and provided a good introduction to Alaska. From there we went to the WIldlife Museum At Elmendorf Air Force Base. This is a very small museum but has a good collection of native Alaskan wildlife. You get to see up close and personal just how large a grizzly bear is. They are to be respected!

After Anchorage we drove to the Kenai Pensinsula, first to Homer then to Soldotna and lastly to Seward before heading back to Anchorage and then home.

Your journey will begin in Anchorage. You will then travel to the Kenai Peninsula, then to Homer, and Seward. Photos from the Soldotna area are included under Kenai Peninsula. Each page has a button at the bottom of the page to take you to the next page.
